In the last few days, the southern state of Kerala has been in the grip of the worst natural disaster to strike the state in decades, which causing much damage to life and property. Kerala is facing severe and torrential rain and furious landslides across the state since last June. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has declared Red Alert in all the 14 districts of Kerala. The sluice gates of 33 dams were opened as they reached their capacity. All the rivers in the state are overflowing, which causes severe damages to the houses, roads, bridges, shops etc. Thousands of people have lost their livelihood. Most of the people have lost their cattle, which were their lone source of income. Hundreds of hectares of cultivable land have been washed away. Most of them were ready for harvest as the state was preparing for Onam celebration. Since the monsoon started above 256 people have been died. Several people are still missing. More than two lakh people have been shifted to relief camps. The Kochi International Airport has suspended its operations and trains were cancelled and forced to terminate at neighbouring states. The Army, Navy, Air force, state police and rescue team are tirelessly working to minimize the death toll. The state government, political parties, and voluntary organizations are actively engaging in the relief and rescue activities.
